Acres to Hectares: The Ultimate Land Measurement Guide

You are looking at a farm listing online. It says "50 hectares." Is that a small hobby farm or a massive ranch? If you are used to thinking in acres, you might be completely lost.

Land measurement is one of the oldest forms of math, dating back to when we first started farming. But today, the divide between the Imperial system (Acres) and the Metric system (Hectares) causes confusion for real estate agents, farmers, and land buyers worldwide.

The Magic Number: 2.471

This is the most important number in land real estate:

• 1 Hectare = 2.471 Acres
• 1 Acre = 0.4047 Hectares

Think of it this way: A hectare is roughly 2.5 times bigger than an acre. So if you have 10 hectares, you have about 25 acres.

Visualizing the Size

Numbers are great, but what does this actually look like?

What is an Acre?

Historically, an acre was defined as the amount of land one man could plow in one day with an ox.
In modern terms, it is about 75% of a football field (American football, including end zones).

What is a Hectare?

A hectare is a metric unit. It is a square that is 100 meters by 100 meters (10,000 square meters).
It is roughly equal to two standard soccer fields placed side by side.

Buying Land Abroad

If you are from the US or UK and buying land in Europe, South America, or Asia, you will almost certainly deal with hectares.
Tip: Always double-check the price per unit. A "cheap" price per acre might look expensive if you mistakenly think it is per hectare!
